Theresa Conway was born in Brooklyn, NY, the eldest of six siblings born to fervent Catholic Irish-born parents, Michael and Winifred.
She had a very active life as a Divine Providence Shelter volunteer, a member of YCW and MEDICO (Dr. Dooley’s group), as well as a full time job in New York City when she first got to know the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
Theresa was drawn to the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary by a deep attraction to Franciscan spirituality and to the contemplative stance of the Institute. These characteristics plus the FMM mission activity-—vast and diverse and going wherever the need was——that finally convinced Theresa to enter the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
Sr. Ellen McCarthy, FMM, a relative of Theresa’s mother, helped to introduce her to the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary and Theresa soon found that the Eucharistic Adoration and prayer life of the FMM would satisfy a need in her.
Theresa entered the Institute in September, 1962 at the same time as her younger sister, Maureen. They did not know or tell one another or the family until a week or so before they entered!
