Intercessions:

Litany of the Magi (Elmer Wit, adapted)

As the wise men of old followed the star,

R/ help us to follow the leading of your Spirit.

As they were led to the Savior,

R/ lead us to him who is the way, the truth and the life

As they brought treasures to the King,

R/  empower us to bring his gifts of faith, hope and love to the world.

As they fell down and worshipped the Child,

R/ inspire us to serve him every moment of our lives.

As Herod was kept from doing him harm,

R/  keep us from doing violence to his Name by thought,  word or deed.

As Mary kept all things and pondered them in her heart,

R/  enable us to remember and to love.

As your Son shines forever as the light of the world,

R / shine forth in us that we may be lights in our generation.

All      Holy Jesus, come from God fill us now and always with your light.

Response:

Rise up, Franciscan Missionaries of Mary,be radiant with joy, because our Light has come.

Rise up …

Let us welcome with all nations the peace and salvation of our God!

Because our Light has come.

Glory to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,

Rise up …

“Magnificat of the Magi” (Ann Johnson)

Antiphon:    Seeing the star the magi were filled with joy, and entering the house, they offered the child gold, frankincense and myrrh, alleluia!

I am immersed in peaceful silence in the presence

of those you lead to us, O God.

With quiet awe my spirit listens to the story

of the star-led quest for this newly born one.

I feel your knowing eyes probing the depths of

my wonder-filled heart, and my heart responds,

in the fullness of knowing.

Yes, this day of recognition, affirmed by wise people, shall be remembered as long as stars shine for in this time the Almighty has become a simple   child through us, the ones who have united with you to claim your promised presence.

Holy is this child’s name,

and caring those who touch our lives.

He lifts his tiny hand to these mighty rulers,

and they understand pure power.

Their prideful eyes are washed clean with tears.

These Magi have disregarded Herod

and bow before our little child.

Their hearts overflow with the fruit of their search, and their rich gifts lie in shadow on the floor.

He has redeemed Jerusalem.

The Lord has demonstrated his holy power

before the eyes of all the nations.

All the ends of the earth will see

the victory of our God.“

Reading: Isaiah 52:7-10

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good  news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel[a] reigns!

The watchmen shout and sing with joy,

for before their very eyes

they see the Lord returning to Jerusalem.

Let the ruins of Jerusalem break into joyful song,

for the Lord has comforted his people.

He has redeemed Jerusalem.

The Lord has demonstrated his holy power

before the eyes of all the nations.

All the ends of the earth will see

the victory of our God.

 Psalm

(composed from the writings of Mary of the Passion)

Antiphon:   The Magi offered their gifts: gold,

frankincense and myrrh, alleluia!

The Star guides them to Bethlehem,
the house of the bread of life
because only the truly poor
are aware they need the bread of life.

They find this bread of life

in the arms of Mary
and they adore him, offering him their humble gifts:
it is Epiphany!

Today, we, Franciscan Missionaries of Mary,

celebrate the anniversary
of the Institute’s foundation –
an Apostle sent by God! (MD 77)

In 1877 Pius IX blessed this little group,

destined to perpetuate the Epiphany,
saying to all the nations: “Come to Jesus”.
Mary shows him to us,
and asks us to continue her mission. (MD 77)

And do we, fmm, understand

this gift of God which is the Institute?
We need to be inundated with the true light that is Jesus,
if we are to carry out our mission. (MD 77)

Jesus, open our eyes,

reveal to us the holiness of this feast
as you make a covenant with all of humanity. (MD 79)

Through the intercession of Mary, Star of the Sea,

we ask for ourselves and for all
members of the Institute, present and future,
a prompt fidelity which will always enlighten us. (MD 86)

Mary’s action was to give Jesus to humanity.

(MD 92)

We, her missionaries, wish to continue her action;
giving peace, giving Jesus everywhere and always.

Grant Lord, that we may be faithful messengers today and forever. (MD 93)

Glory . . .

CALL TO PRAYER

Let us travel with the Magi, and with them enter Bethlehem, the House of the Bread of Life.  The shades of darkness are scattered, the light is manifested.  The shepherds adored the Child in the crib, but He is stronger now, and the Magi adore Him in Mary’s arms.  It is the Epiphany!  Jesus is manifesting himself to the Gentiles.

Like the Magi, know the gift of God, that unspeakable gift of faith which, the Apostle teaches us, “has delivered us from the power of darkness …”.  Jesus, open our eyes, help us to understand the importance if this great day when you made an alliance with the whole human race.         (MD 79)

Pause …

Leader :  God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God,

All        :  We bless you.

Leader: Object of the Magi’s search, subject of an old man’s  song, fulfillment of the Baptist’s preaching,

All         : We bless you.

Leader: Mary’s Son, Joseph’s son, God’s only son,

All         :  We bless you.

Song     : Every Nation on Earth (Haugen) or your choice

Reflection

“The Feast of the Epiphany is the anniversary of the Foundation of our Institute.  It was on that day in 1877 that Pius IX deigned to bless and authorize it.  Let us consider this as a grace from Heaven.  This feast is that of the conversion of the Gentiles, and none could be more suitable as a date for the foundation of a missionary Institute.”The Divine Master wished to mark the Epiphany by another grace for the Institute.  It was on this  day that the Very Reverend Father Bernadine of Portogruaro sent us his mantle, saying at the same time the words so dear to our hearts:  This is the symbol of the protection that our Father St . Francis and his children accord always to the Missionaries of Mary.  Behold the mantle beneath which the missionaries may always find shelter.”(from the Custom Book: Way of Life)

Closing Prayer

Lord, today we wish to take our place with the Magi.
Before leaving Jesus, they adored him.
Like them, we prostrate ourselves
at the feet of the Infant and his Mother.
and we adore the Word Incarnate,
Sun of Justice, Prince of Peace.
Today he sends us to bring this message of peace and justice to all persons in our world who are seeking for signposts.
We renew the total gift of our profession –
the offering of ourselves. (MD 95)
Help us to become more and more a living host, holy and pleasing in your eyes. (MD 96)
Amen.

Closing Hymn: “We Three Kings”

Prayers of Praise and Intercession

We turn toward Jesus who chose the sign of a star to manifest himself to the Gentiles.  As Franciscan Missionaries of Mary let us call down the reign of peace for our world.

R/  Praise to you, Jesus sent by the Father;  give peace to our world.

Jesus, the Magi had their signpost – the star our world sorely lacks signposts because of so much violence. Increase the messengers who announce the Gospel of peace at the price of their lives.         R/

Jesus, in 1877 Pius IX blessed the little group which would pass the flame of fire to all those who would be called to keep this flame alive – our passion for mission. Strengthen our steps along the roads of the world. R/

Jesus, the Spirit is always at work. Help us to witness increasingly to the signs of the Spirit’s action in our world.     R/

Our Father

Response:

Rise up, Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, be radiant with joy. Because our Light has come.

–  Rise up …

Let us welcome with all nations the peace and salvation of our God!

– Because our light …

Glory to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,

        –   Rise up …

Canticle of Zachary:

Antiphon: Today the Church is united to her Spouse:

                    Christ in the Jordan purifies her other faults;

                    the Magi bring their gifts to the royal nuptials;

water is changed into wine for the joy of the invited,

                    alleluia.

Blessed are you, God of Israel,
for you have visited and redeemed your people,
and have raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of your servant.

As you spoke through the mouths
of your holy prophets from of old,
that we should be saved from our enemies,
and from the hand of all who oppress us;

to perform the mercy promised to our ancestors,
and to remember your holy covenant,

the oath you swore to Abraham and Sarah,
to grant us deliverance from evil,
that we might serve you without fear,
in holiness and righteousness,
all the days of our lives.

And you, child,
will be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the holy One
to prepare God’s ways,

to give knowledge of salvation to God’s people
in the forgiveness of their sins,

through the tender mercy of our God
when the day shall dawn upon us from on high
to give light to those who sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet
into the way of peace.  Glory…
